Many couples who are expecting their babies for the first time are not well aware of early pregnancy scans. There remain many confusions regarding what an early pregnancy scan is, why to go through an early pregnancy scan, how a sonographer conducts a baby scan, etc. Window to the Womb, being the most trustworthy early pregnancy scan clinic in Cardiff is penning this blog to discuss the snippets of an early pregnancy scan.

What is an early pregnancy scan?

An early pregnancy scan is conducted by expert sonographers at the very initial stage of pregnancy. Generally, a pregnant woman can go through an early pregnancy scan after the 6th week of her pregnancy.

What are the reasons for having an early pregnancy scan?

An early pregnancy scan is done for multiple reasons. First of all, an early pregnancy scan acts as the most accurate confirmation of pregnancy. Besides it checks,

    • The number of fetuses inside the womb (One, two, three, or even more)

    • The position of the baby

    • The position of the placenta

    • The level of amniotic fluid

    • The proper growth of the fetus and its well-being

    • Birth defect (if there is any)

How is an early pregnancy scan conducted?

Before the ultrasound

Before the ultrasound scan, a pregnant woman needs to drink adequate water so that her bladder gets full. The more the bladder of the mother would be full, the more prominent images can be seen during the ultrasound. Generally, a pregnant woman has to drink 4-6 glasses of water before going through her ultrasound scan.

During the ultrasound

The entire process of ultrasound scan takes more or less 30 minutes. During this time, a mommy-to-be has to lie on a padded table and an adequate amount of water-soluble get is applied to the skin of the abdominal area. After that, with the help of a transducer, a high-frequency sound wave is sent through the abdomen of the mom-to-be and as a result, clear pictures of the growing fetus are seen on a screen. Medical studies have confirmed the fact that the sound wave and the water-soluble gel are totally safe for the mother and the developing fetus inside her womb.

After the ultrasound- After the scan, the gel is gently wiped off the mother’s skin by the stuff. Next, the mother is sent to urinate as the process is over now.

Pregnancy ultrasound scans are totally safe and they do not at all harm the baby. But the ultrasound must be conducted by trained and certified sonographers only.
