What Can You Expect From An Early Pregnancy Scan?
Anticipation
is a big part of pregnancy. You wonder what your baby will look like, whether
she will be healthy or not. An early ultrasound provides you a peek into the
womb, a chance to know about your baby’s due date and wellbeing. You get a
clear image from a Private Ultrasound Scan of
the baby at the clinic in Cardiff.
A
first-trimester ultrasound is done between seven to eight weeks from the first
day of your last menstrual period. The main thing is to confirm the due date
and to make sure that you can hear the baby’s heartbeat and see if there is
more than one fetus. The doctor can closely examine if there is any abnormality
or genetic problem in the fetus or find any issues with the cervix or uterus.
If you are anxious to learn about the baby’s gender as well as the anatomy of
the baby then that can be known from the next ultrasound at 18 weeks of
pregnancy.
The
typical ultrasound produces a two-dimensional cross-sectional image of the
baby. Some advanced facilities produce a 3D or 4D ultrasound which produces a
more photograph-like image of the baby. The high-tech scans are not necessary
but if the doctor is suspecting an abnormality like cleft palate then it
becomes hard to closely examine the baby with 2D imaging.
A
prenatal ultrasound can be done in two ways, transabdominal or transvaginally.
You may get a transvaginal ultrasound of the baby as it gives a more clear picture
of the baby. For a transabdominal ultrasound, you need to come with a full
bladder. A full bladder tilts your uterus up for clear viewing.
The
first scan is done to determine the location and the number of pregnancies. If
the pregnancy develops outside the uterine cavity then it is called an ectopic
pregnancy and is terminated as soon as possible. If the pregnancy develops
outside the intrauterine cavity, in the fallopian tube then that pregnancy is
known as ectopic pregnancy. This pregnancy can lead to life-threatening
conditions and has to be terminated right away. The number of pregnancies can
be easily found out from the scan if more than one pregnancies are present.
The
gender determination is done in the next scan. The hand, feet, toes, and ears
are seen developing at an early stage. The heartbeat of the baby can be heard
at this stage.
Do not forget to visit the Private Ultrasound Scan Cardiff if your doctor advises for a routine ultrasound.
