How To Sleep During Pregnancy?

The entire pregnancy is to be well-taken care of but the first trimester is too risky. Maximum miscarriages occur in the first trimester. Complications that develop during pregnancy leads to birth defects. Sometimes complications may lead to stillbirth and miscarriage.

Experts at the clinic of Private Ultrasound Scan Cardiff have shed light on the sleeping positions during pregnancy.

• Side Sleeping-

As the pregnancy advances doctor advises side sleeping. As the belly grows sleeping positions may be added to your list. As the fetus grows bigger there is a chance of compression of blood flow to the uterus. When patients are diagnosed with abnormal heart rhythms the doctors lay down the patients on the side during cesarean delivery. There is an increased rise in the number of stillbirths for the back sleepers.

• Right Side-

Sleeping on the left side is ideal. But sleeping on the right side is not to be avoided. There is a slight risk of compression of the inferior vena cava when sleeping on the right side.

• Left Side-

Sleeping on the left side is considered ideal during pregnancy. It allows optimum blood flow from the inferior vena cava. The large vein runs parallel to the right side, carries blood to the heart and the baby. Sleeping on the left takes the pressure off the liver and the kidneys. This gives more room to function properly and helps in swelling in the foot and ankles.

• Stomach Sleeping-

Until you are about sixteen weeks pregnant you can sleep on your stomach. At this point, the belly grows bigger making this position less and less desirable. The uterine walls and the amniotic fluid protect the fetus from being squished. To make the position more and more comfortable it is advised to buy a stomach pillow.

• Back Sleeping-

Sleeping on the back is comfortable during the first trimester. Sometimes sleeping on your back is linked to stillbirth, but it is to be understood that there are other factors to play. Towards the end of the third trimester avoiding sleeping on your back decreases the chances of stillbirth. There are other issues associated with sleeping on the back. They are back pain, hemorrhoids, digestive issue, and poor circulation.
